The LitFest & Black Pear Press Young Writer Competition 2021

FREE ENTRY

We’re looking for talented young writers to send us stories of a maximum of 300 words. The competition is open to the following age groups:

Age Groups (in current school years) JUNIOR: School Years 3-6 /INTERMEDIATE: School Years 7-9 /SENIOR: School Years 10-12

Winning entrants for each age category will receive:

A trophy and

£30 book token – 1st Place

£20 book token – 2nd Place

£10 book token – 3rd Place

All winners will have their work published in the Young Writers’ Anthology by Black Pear Press. Other highly commended entries will also be considered for publication.

THEME Gods & Monsters

Competition Rules

  • The competition is open to 7-17 years of age (Year 3 to Year 12).
  • Closing date 30th April.
  • Entry is FREE.
  • Only 1 entry per writer.
  • 300 word stories on the THEME.
  • Submitted pieces must not have been published elsewhere and must be the entrant’s original work. Translations of anyone else’s work are not eligible. Copyright remains with the writer.
  • Entries may be published on LitFest, Rotary and Titania websites and social media, read at LitFest and Rotary events and included in an anthology.
  • Entries must be in English.
  • The subject line of the e-mail must state: Young Writer Competition.
  • Entries should be attached as a Word document. Give your name, age, school year and contact details in the body of the email, as well as the title and word count of your submission. The entry and consent form below must be completed and digitally signed by you and your parent / guardian and be emailed with your entry. NB Schools who already have permission from parents / guardians need complete only one form on behalf of the school.
  • Entries should be single spaced, in a legible 12pt font such as Times New Roman or Arial.
  • The winner and runners-up will be announced at the launch of Worcestershire Literary Festival (6th June) and notified via email. We hope winners will read at the Black Pear Press Anthology Launch planned for later in 2021 (provisionally November).
  • The theme this year: ‘Gods & Monsters’ — all styles and genres are welcome.
  • No correspondence will be entered into regarding the outcome of this competition.

Entry into the competition signifies agreement to these rules:

  • All entries will be judged by a panel of judges.
  • Judges have been selected for experience in Literature, Journalism or related experience.
  • It is essential the entry and consent form below are completed for applications to be accepted.
Disclaimers and parental consent should be written and digitally signed in the body of your email in the following manner:

I give permission for this writing to be reproduced in any format and for the author’s likeness to be used for promotional purposes within Worcestershire Literary Festival, Rotary International in Britain and Ireland, and Titania.

I also agree to be contacted by the Public Relations Officers of these organisations for public relations purposes.
